Month: August 2026

  • A typical week

    A typical week

No one has asked me, “what is your typical week like?” so I figured I would share.

This schedule is from the past week, and even though Rosie didnt have dance, I added what that part of the schedule will include. Dance starts this coming week, so I am trying to get myself mentally prepared.

    Monday

4:40-5:15: Quiet time. Im getting back to reading my Bible, then go through a list of people to pray for.

5:15-6:10: Workout, or other things. This can be a time to “piddle” and pay bills, read emails, dream about my next vacation, or write a blog post.

The workout is either rings, or a HIIT video by Juice and Toya. On the rings it can be pull ups, push ups, tricep extensions, dips, rows, or flys. A lot can be done in 15 minutes.

6:10: Wake up Mercy, Hazy loves it. She gives her a big old lick right on the eye, and it makes me smile every morning. So far the kids arent sick of it, but one day they will be.

6:10-6:45: Make breakfast for the family, same as always. This week was the first week, so we had to get some pics:

    6:45-7:20: Take Mercy to school.

7:20-7:45: Time with Rosie before she does her carpool to middle school with 2 other families, so we only have to drive 2 days a week.

7:45-8:20: drive Rosie to school. OR, take the dog on a walk.

8:20-9: Any last minute things before starting work: talking with Taylor, emailing this and that.

9-2:45: Work, laundry, and a quick mid-day walk around the block to stay healthy.

2:45-3:15: Pickup Rosie. Late in the summer, I realized the kids needed their addresses updated for schools, even though their schools didnt change. I did this 2 days past the deadline for school bus assignments, so my punishment is picking up the kids from school until the bus routes get updated, which should happen this week.

    3:15-4:45: Finish the work day.

5:00-6: Start on dinner of some kind:

    6-7: Nothing. Just chill.

7-7:30: Take Rosie and our carpool neighbor to dance

    7:30-9:15: Read, or watch tv;

9:15-9:45: Pickup Rosie and carpool friend from dance.

    Tuesday:

    The same morning routine:

9-10:30: Coffee with Jimmy in the morning while we worked together.

    Evening: Break.

    Wednesday:

    The same morning routine:

    5:15-6:15 Mercy Gymnastics

7-8:30: Small group leadership training at our church

    7:30-9:30: Rosie Dance

    Thursday:

    The same morning routine.

5-7pm: Taylor takes a meal to her friend that just had a baby.

6-9pm: Luke went out with some other software engineers in town for the monthly meetup at Joymongers.

7-9:30: Rosie dance (We pickup only).

    Friday:

    The same morning routine

5-7pm: Host family training. We will be having a “Fellow” live with us this year from the Greensboro Fellows. This is a program for post-college students to work and take seminary-type classes with a cohort of about 12 people. This is our first year hosting (in our new house) so we did a training for it.

7-8:30: Parent Vision night for the Church Youth Group. This was a time to go over some of what the church youth group does and what the year entails, led by Jake Portillo. +1 Jake for a well-led meeting.

    7:15-8:15: Rosie Dance.

    Saturday:

6:30-7:30 Prepare 28 pounds of Boston Butts for a back-to-school neighborhood block party we hosted. Dry the meat with a paper towel, pre-heat the smoker to 225, rub the butts with spices.

7:30 Put the meat on, and spray it every 30 minutes with vinegar and apple juice.

7:30-8:30: Make leftover sausage and eggs for breakfast

    8:30-9: Clean the kitchn

9-10: Make the carolina vinegar bbq sauce:

10:30: Dip the pork butts in a special sauce to keep them delicious. The container overflowed, so had to clean up the deck.

    10:30-11:30: relax.

12-2: Take mercy to a birthday party at Safari Nation. Its heaven on earth:

2:30-3:30: Pull the pork off the grill, cover and let it rest for about an hour or two:

3:30-4:30: Yardwork. Use the blower, put things away. Also, Taylor got the kids to do a “cleaning competition” to see who could clean their rooms the best. I dont know the rules, but if they worked together, they both got cash.

4:30-5: Clean the grill, shred the pork.

5-6: Cook the hot dogs for the kiddos.

6-9:30: Party with our immediate neighbors, and parents of 6th graders and kindergartners. Taylor wanted to do a birthday party, but I personally think she didnt want to draw attention to herself, so she pivoted to this. But, it was a fun time to meet our immediate neighbors, and see some of the parents Rosie hangs with while she is out on her scooter/bike around the neighborhood. So many 6th grade girls.

    Sunday:

7-8:30: Make breakfast, get everyone ready for church. If Taylor volunteers at welcome committee, she leaves early and drives separate. If Rosie volunteers, she has to leave at 8:10. If I volunteer, we dont have to leave early.

    9-10:45: Church

11-11:45: Eat lunch early this week.

    11:45-12:45: Sunday afternoon nap.

1-1:30: Clean up the house, return the yard games.

1:30-3:30: Mow and blow and trim the old house. I threw out my back by picking up the mower to put in the back of the acura, but the yard looks good. Hopefully we sell this house soon though. Taylor asked for some before and after pics, since the yard was looking a bit crazy after all the rain:

4-7:30: Dropoff items that were left at our house, pickup dinner on the way to Taylor’s parents house, and have a family dinner to celebrate three birthdays in August: Taylor, Mallory, and Sadie. This year we saw a 6 foot black snake in Ted’s beautiful garden, and that kept us entertained (We let it live, but there are no promises what will happen tomorrow when the young impressionable grandkids arent there).

When we got home, Mercy was defiant and said she wanted to stay up all night. Taylor said ok, just stay in your room and work on this puzzle. 10 minutes later:

  • Surprise!

    Surprise!

The new house- we will call it that until there is no more old house and the old house is sold- has come with lots of surprises.

It has marble counters! Thats fancy, maybe a little too fancy- because even though it has marble, it doesnt mean it is new, or even great. It means a lot of TLC, and we inherited the lack of care on many of the surfaces. I tried 9 of the 146 different ways to clean marble that the internet “guaranteed” would work, to no avail. And, surprise! Having a professional do it was a quote for $4000, so this will be tabled.

Beyond the counter tops, there was also a surprise error code on our dishwasher! Who does one call for these things? Max the appliance guy.

After getting it to work (once), the second time, and all my attempts of a fix also failed, so we did a family trip to Lowe’s and decided a kitchenaid would be in our future, and paid Max to install it, because it is better to pay him (a local business guy) than Lowes to do the install, plus I was determined that our time with Max would end on a positive note.

Then we went on the theme and surprised Mercy with a sleepover! Ok, it wasnt really a surprise, but I am trying to build a theme here as we had Mercy’s cousin, Everly, stay the night with us and come to the baseball game. This was the first time we made it to the end of the game, and the real surprise? Overtime! Why pay for 9 innings of baseball when you can have 11?

We really did have fun, and if you know mercy, you know she doesnt smile this big very often- Everly is a great guest and we enjoyed the night; plus, it was fireworks night, and they did a (surprisingly) great display!

The next morning Every joined us for church, and they were surprised to be asked to carry the cross for the Children’s church time; also, Rosie and I both had our separate volunteer duties as well.

Are we done with the surprises? Oh no. This year, for the very first time, I surprised Taylor with an overnight trip to the Fearrington House to celebrate our 16 year anniversary.

It took a bit of work to prepare for:

    1. The PGA tournament was in town this weekend, so that boinked any efforts within Greensboro.
    2. It was our first night out with a babysitter that wasnt family, so that took preparation.
    3. Taylor was supposed to volunteer for church on Sunday, so I had to sneakily get our out of that (Thanks Zach for helping!)
    4. Rosies friend was supposed to join us for church while her mom had a shift at work to pick up.
    5. Do I pack Taylors bag for her and say “get in the car”, or tell her early and allow her time to pack? I went with the latter, and thankful for it.

But, we havent been on a trip this year as we have been consumed with selling the old house, and it was important to still make time, so I bit the bullet and made it happen. The short answer? It was awesome and we will definitely be back, but we will do it a bit differently next time.

The reason for this place was because I thought it was important for Taylor to have a massage- it is something she wouldnt get for herself, and she has been kicking butt in her job burning the midnight oil, and she deserved it.

The room was great, and way bigger than I expected, but there was a reason. I thought I got the cheapest room (as we always do), but way back in July, I thought it might be a good idea to bump up to a better room, so we did. And, it was worth it for a single night; and I splurged for the $20 strawberries and charcuterie.

We had dinner at the restaurant because I didnt really want to research restaurants in Pittsboro, NC. And, surprise! It may have been the best meal Taylor and I have ever eaten, it was so delicious.

The menu was custom printed to say “Happy Anniversary Mr and Mrs Logan”, ha! What a fancy touch.

The server looked like the actor Sean Penn and did an excellent job. He told me to relax and just be myself; I told him he didnt want me to be myself in that environment, and he said “within reason.”

We sat for 2 hours as small portions came. I had the seafood up and down, and the image above was from the blackened Mahi- somehow a complete black crust, but it did not taste charred whatsoever- it was a complete mystery how something can be cooked like charcoal, but taste absolutely delicious and moist. Im still wondering how they did it, but this was the best piece of fish I have ever had in my life.

After a couple hours rest, surprise! Its time to eat again. Then, stroll around the property, get a couples massage, and head home.

We will definitely go back and do a few things different:

    1. Bring a bottle of wine from home. Save some money.
    2. Eat in Pittsboro. There are some good restaurants not too far away, as the restaurant on property may have been the most expensive meal in our marriage. Happy anniversary Taylor!
    3. Get a smaller room.
    4. Skip the massage (it was good, but not for every time).

While preparing for the trip, I rationalized the room upgrade, the dinner, and the massage in isolation. But when putting them all together, the bill was pretty steep. But, we enjoyed it, and learned what to do better for next time.
